Amazonian Turtles

To address these issues, WCS Brazil aims to define population structures and annual recruitment rates of species in the Podocnemididae family, in order to understand whether the number of individuals being lost to uncontrolled harvesting along the rivers on Amazonas state is affecting the maintenance of natural populations.  We will also educate local populations about the ecology, biology and importance of turtles, as well as the risks the turtles face if levels of over consumption continue.  We also intend to continue work to manage turtle nesting beaches.

Therefore, WCS has the challenge of three principal objectives:

  • To define population structures and annual recruitment rates of species in the Podocnemididae family, in order to understand whether the number of individuals being lost to uncontrolled harvesting along the rivers on Amazonas state is affecting the maintenance of natural populations.  As well as increasing our knowledge of river turtles, working in partnership with local communities to improve species management and carry out participatory monitor and research could be a form of environmental education and encourage guarding of the key areas for turtles.
  • To continue work to manage turtle nesting beaches.
  • To develop a program of awareness raising and environmental education focused on river turtles.  This will highlight the consequences of human action such as meat and egg consumption, especially in key areas of Manaus where the turtle trade is strong.

Current areas of focus for WCS in Amazonas state are the Rio Negro and Purus River.
